Toyota Crown Celebrates 70 Years with Special Hybrid and Hydrogen Editions in Japan

The Toyota Crown model celebrates its 70th anniversary this year: the first sedan with this name appeared back in 1955. Now the Crown is in its sixteenth generation, and this is not just one car, but a whole family consisting of four models on two different platforms. To celebrate the anniversary, Toyota is bringing anniversary versions of different Crowns to the Japanese market one after another. Back in April, the Toyota Crown Crossover The 70th crossover sedan was shown , and now two special versions of the most authentic model have been prepared at once – the Toyota Crown sedan of the classic layout.

The full name of the anniversary special version is Toyota Crown Z The 70 th . Such sedans differ from their regular counterparts in their two-tone body coloring in the manner of flagship models of luxury brands. The upper part of the anniversary cars is painted silver, and the lower part can be white or black. Special version logos are added, and 20-inch multi-spoke wheels crown the image. Regular Crown sedans also have these, but for anniversary cars they are made in matte gray.

The second special edition is completely matte, which is reflected in the name: Toyota Crown Z Limited Matte Metal. The body is covered with a dark gray matte coating, which, according to the manufacturer, is particularly wear-resistant. The same 20-inch multi-spoke wheels in a matte gray color are installed, as in the anniversary Crowns. As a result, such a sedan turned out to be “monochrome”.

The interiors of both special editions have a classic Black Lustre finish with decorative inserts made of wood veneer. The 70 th version stands out with laser engraving of the special edition logos: they are placed on the front panel, crystal transmission selector, key fob and leather wallet (included in the package). A similar emblem is also in the welcome lighting of the doors. However, the Limited Matte Metal version is deprived of all this, since it is not formally considered an anniversary one.

Technically, the special versions are no different from regular Toyota Crown sedans for the domestic market. The hybrid modification has a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (185 hp, 255 Nm) and a traction electric motor (180 hp, 300 Nm), the peak power of the system is a relatively modest 245 hp for a two-ton car. Under the hood of the hydrogen Crown sedan is a power unit from the Toyota Mirai model. An electrochemical generator with a capacity of 128 kW (174 hp) supplies energy to an electric motor with a peak power of 182 hp on the rear axle through a buffer battery. The hydrogen reserve is enough for 820 km of travel.

Both special versions of the Toyota Crown sedan can already be ordered in Japan. The anniversary Toyota Crown Z The 70th costs from 7.55 million yen ($53,000) for the hybrid version and 8.55 million yen ($60,000) for the hydrogen version. The matte Toyota Crown Z Limited Matte Metal is more expensive, despite the lack of anniversary status: 8.1 million yen ($57,000) for the hybrid and 9.1 million yen ($64,000) for the hydrogen modification. The cars will be available for order for a limited time.
