Four years ago, Toyota introduced the Aygo X hatchback , which became the company’s smallest model on the European market. And if the previous Aygo had French relatives under the Peugeot and Citroen brands, then the current hatchback exists on its own. Now is the time for a planned update, which affected not only the appearance, but also the technology.

The main external changes affected the front of the car: new headlights, hood, radiator grille and bumper appeared. Turn signal repeaters moved from the wings to the side mirror housings. As before, a two-tone paint job with a black roof and four main body colors is optionally available. The top version retains a huge hatch with a fabric sliding curtain. Depending on the configuration, Toyota Aygo X can have wheels of 17 or 18 inches in diameter.
The interior of the cross-hatchback has been updated in places. For example, a seven-inch display appeared in the instrument cluster, and the media system screen became larger. A more modern climate control unit was installed on the central console, which, however, retained physical buttons and handles. Below, two USB-C connectors and a wireless charging pad appeared. The parking brake is now electromechanical. In addition, Toyota Aygo X acquired an electronic key, electric folding side mirrors and a nanoeX cabin filter.
The trunk volume remained unchanged (231 liters), and this is a great achievement of engineers, because Toyota Aygo X became a hybrid. The power plant from the larger Yaris and Yaris Cross models required a significant redesign of the baby Aygo X. In order to place a four-cylinder 1.5 engine with an electromechanical variator under the hood instead of the previous three-cylinder “liter”, it was necessary to extend the front overhang by 76 mm. Thus, the overall length of the updated SUV increased from 3700 mm to 3776 mm. The traction battery is located transversely under the rear sofa, and the usual 12-volt battery moved from under the hood to the trunk floor.
However, the result is worth all the effort, because from now on Toyota Aygo X has become not only the most environmentally friendly car in the European A class (passport emissions of CO2Â –Â 86 g / km), but also immediately added 44 hp! If the liter naturally aspirated engine developed only 72 hp, then the new hybrid system produces a peak of 116 hp. Compared to its predecessor, the acceleration dynamics can be called hurricane: earlier, acceleration to “hundreds” took 15.5-15.6 s, and now the developers promise less than ten seconds!

With such indicators, it would not be a sin to aim for a sports version, and it really appeared. Toyota Aygo X GR Sport has a more exciting suspension and steering setup, and also flaunts original wheels, a different radiator grille, numerous GR division logos all over the body and a special mustard body color in combination with a black hood. Black and gray accents are used in the interior trim, and a large GR emblem appeared on the steering wheel.
The production of Toyota Aygo X hatchbacks will continue at the Czech plant Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech in Kolin. The market debut of the hybrid baby in Europe is scheduled for the end of 2025. Prices have not yet been announced, but based on the seriously redesigned technology, they will definitely be higher than the current 18 thousand euros in Germany. The older Toyota Yaris now costs from 25,500 euros, so there is room for an increase.
