Once upon a time, the Opel Frontera could rightfully bear the proud title of an SUV, because it was a type of frame models Isuzu Mu/Rodeo. However, last year, the Stellantis concern revived this name after a twenty-year break and showed a completely different Frontera – a compact crossover created on the basis of the Citroen C3 Aircross . However, this did not prevent the Opel company from shaking off the old days and building an expedition vehicle Opel Frontera Gravel, which was not shy about trying on a harsh off-road image again.
The Opel Frontera Gravel show car was created by the joint efforts of the automaker and the tuning studios BlackFish and XS. The modest family crossover has acquired an impressive off-road body kit, which includes other bumpers, a winch, trunks on the rear roof pillars and a Thule Canyon XT expedition rack with an LED chandelier. Even tree trimmers are installed. The crossover boasts 16-inch Borbet CWE wheels with “toothy” BFGoodrich tires.
Other exterior decorations include a matte black hood and roof, and the entire body is covered with a protective film. The color combination was chosen specifically for the Gravel version and is not found in the regular range of Opel models. Other signs of the show car are numerous orange accents, generously scattered throughout the body. There are no images of the interior yet, but it is stated that it has new seats with microfiber trim and the same orange decor, and the headliner is completely black.
The Opel Frontera Gravel is based on the electric version of a regular crossover. This means that the crossover has front-wheel drive with an electric motor with a capacity of 156 hp and a battery with a capacity of 54 kWh. Although a version with an additional rear electric motor is offered for the platform models Jeep Avenger or Alfa Romeo Junior.
The live show of the Opel Frontera Gravel show car will take place on May 30 in Austria at the XS CarNight Wörthersee festival. Based on the public’s reaction, a decision may be made to begin small-scale production of such crossovers.
